Match Day
Match Day is an exciting event celebrating a culmination of years of hard work and marks a significant milestone in a student's medical career.
Matching is the final step in the residency application process. Students submit residency program applications, interview for programs, and rank the programs where they would like to work. At the same time, programs will rank the students that they would like to accept. A computer algorithm will then use this information to "match" students to their placements.
What Happens on Match Day?
Match Day is an event that celebrates fourth-year medical students learning where they will be placed for residency training. Students open a sealed envelope containing their residency placement information as it has been released by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Here, they are joined by their peers, family, and friends to celebrate this milestone. The event is also live-streamed for those who are interested in watching virtually.
When is Match Day?
Aligning with the NRMP Match Day, this event typically occurs on the third Friday of March. This year’s Match Day at SUNY Upstate Medical University was held on March 15, 2024.
